quotes from early appaloosa pamphlet
Back to Appaloosa Standards
"The Appaloosa Horse Club, which is a registry association, was incorporated on December 30, 1938, to preserve, improve and standardize the strain of leopard spotted horses known in the northwest as Appaloosa. It was established to maintain proper books, to register the pedigrees, to issue owner certificates, to organize stud books, and to generally maintain the files.....

"Our problems are unlike those of other registration associations for several reasons. We are championing a breed of horses so few in number that the main purpose is to preserve the blood of the once famous Appaloosa war and buffalo horses of the northwest.....

"We do not wish to charge unreasonable prices for registration for it is the best of the remaining blood we are eager to get---not the financial gain.

"We do not wish to put on a propoganda advertising campaign to try to popularize the breed but we do want to gather in the best of the Appaloosa horses into a registration association so we can keep records of the breeding and improve the present status of the breed until it becomes more popular by its own merits.....

"We are laying the fundation for a new building of the Appaloosa horse. It is a foundation we hope will be solid enough for the coming generation to build on....

"It is our purpose to lay a foundation for interested breeders to build upon carefully. This cannot be done with out keeping pedigrees and records.....

"The long looked for Appaloosa Horse Club Inc. is now a reality and breeders of these famous north-western horses may look forward to accomplishing much in bettering and preserving the popular spotted animals.

"What is in store in the future for this particular strain of horses?
Time only can answer this question: but we sincerely hope to coordinate the somewhat scattered efforts of breeders with an organization that will keep records, issue certificates of pedigree, determine standards, and promote interest. The present objective is to carefully infuse into the breed pure Arabian blood, where the blood is available...... Where the Arabian blood is not available it may be advisable to use Morgan or Thoroughbred blood where individuals may be found that have Arabian characteristics and saddle conformation. However, we must keep in mind that color qualification is necessary for registration and eventually outcrossing will be discouraged and perhaps discontinued altogether.

"Our present desire is that all owners and interested parties will join the club and in a cooperative spirit help mould the destiny of what is perhaps the most glamorous of all breeds of horses---the Appaloosa."
