Active Filtering is a process on our server that
prevents or blocks access to certain material on the Internet. Filtering is most commonly
used to prevent children from accessing inappropriate material and to keep employees
productive on the Internet. With server-based solutions, a site is blocked before it
gets to the users computer. This makes it the most efficient, least costly and most
reliable filtering solution.
Active Filtering monitors three major types of traffic including porn, search engines,
and newsgroups. The porn filter scans both web (HTTP) and file transfers
(FTP) requests. It also blocks dangerous information such as bomb-making
instructions. Search engine monitoring determines which searches are solely
intended to return porn and automatically blocks these requests. Newsgroup
filtering compares requests to newsgroups with its own database. If a request
returns anything, it automatically terminates any further requests to that newsgroup.
| Q. |
What is the difference between client filtering software and Active
Filtering? |
| A. |
Client filtering software is like other software products: you need to
load it onto your computer. This was the first type of filtering available to consumers
back in 1995. You need to update the site lists, install fixes and provide continuous
maintenance. With Active Filtering, all of these chores are done for you on the
server. It is the simplest, most up-to-date solution to protect consumers from
inappropriate content on the Internet. |
| Q. |
What makes a Web site inappropriate? |
| A. |
The Internet is a wonderful resource, but it also contains a vast amount
of inappropriate information including pornography and other material unsuitable for young
people. USOL.com identifies the types of Web sites which maybe inappropriate and has
developed a filtering philosophy that we use to make determinations on which sites we
block. |
| Q. |
Who decides which sites to block? |
| A. |
USOL.com does use keywords to determine which sites to block, and then
reviews the sites to make sure they should be blocked. Reviewing sites individually allows
USOL.com to evaluate all material that might otherwise go unnoticed and unfiltered using a
keyword method. <> |
| Q. |
Can an adult access a site that Active Filtering blocks? |
| A. |
Yes. USOL.com provides an override feature that allows authorized
users to view the blocked sites. |
